When Duncan arrives at school one morning, he finds a stack of letters, one from each of his crayons, complaining about how he uses them.

One day, Duncan is happily coloring with his crayons when a stack of postcards arrives in the mail from his former crayons, each of which has run away or been left behind, and all of which want to come home.

A boy's red crayon is very helpful at school, providing him with interesting facts about red things in the world, but as it gets stubbier with use it stops cooperating and starts hiding.

When his friends are less than impressed by the crayon portraits he draws of them, Pete the cat begins doubting his artistic abilities before reconnecting with his unfailingly creative, groovy spirit and the realization that there are no mistakes in art.
