A mischievous gnome turns the old tree trunk outside Kai and Kelly's cottage into a dragon which carries the children off to the Land of Long Ago where they meet a princess, rescue a knight, and trick the king of the trolls, but when they return to the old tree trunk they find it has rotted in the sun and they despair of ever getting home.

Princess Sylvie and father, the king, go for a walk in the woods when her dog runs off and they meet many new friends.
